Nam Khem Children's Center

This Learning Center performs a significant function in a community that was particularly hard-hit by the tsunami. Among its students, there are several who lost family members, and one who was orphaned and lives full-time at the facility. All of them receive loving care and support as they cope with the personal and emotional aftermath of the tragedy.

This Center provides meals for the students, and a full curriculum of classes. It also has a television, a cd player and a full stock of DVD movies and programs. Imagine my surprise, however, when I sat with the children as they watched one selection with rapt attention (04.jpg below). It was a talk-show in English. I asked the students if they understood what the people were saying. Of course, they didn't. But they were spellbound all the same. Oh, boy, kids are the same wherever one goes.
