Bang Niang Children's Center

Bang Niang Children's Learning Center is a remarkable facility in the Khao Lak area run by the Grassroots HRE (Human Rights Education) and Development Committee (Burma). It provides sevices for infants through MS children. Each morning the children are collected from the surrounding Burmese immigrant camps (see the Burmese Camps album for photos of the camps where these children live) and transported by song-taew to the school, where they are taught Burmese, Thai, English, math and a number of other subjects. Unlike the other two Learning Centers, Bang Niang does not have a kitchen and children and staff must bring or purchase their meals and snacks.

It does, however, have plenty of space for the children to play soccer and other games during recesses, a feature missing from the other two I visited. And like the other Centers, it is a vibrant learning community where the children are safe and supported.
